The Museum of African American History | Boston & Nantucket mourns the passing of Lorraine O’Grady, a visionary artist, cultural critic, and proud Boston native. O’Grady, the recipient of this year’s President’s Award was honored posthumously at our recent Living Legends Gala. She was a trailblazer whose groundbreaking work continues to resonate and inspire generations.

The President’s Award is a prestigious honor presented to exemplary individuals and organizations who embody the museum’s mission in extraordinary ways by making meaningful contributions to society Bestowed at the discretion of the museum’s president, the award highlights a commitment to recognizing historical achievements and contemporary endeavors that promote the preservation and dissemination of African American heritage and culture. This award serves as a beacon of inspiration, encouraging others to continue the vital work of fostering an inclusive and enlightened society.

Born and raised in Boston, O’Grady attended Girls’ Latin School and Wellesley College. She worked as a research economist, literary and commercial translator, and rock music critic. In the 1970s—inspired to produce work that served her own ideas — she became a respected art maker.

In the 1980s, O’Grady’s performance art piece Mlle Bourgeoise Noire challenged racial inequities in the mainstream art world. Though she initially considered this work unsuccessful at the time due to the lack of advancement of Black voices in the art world, its enduring legacy reflects her profound impact on how we think about race, gender, and representation in art. Her iconic 1983 performance art piece ART IS…, which occurred during a parade in Harlem with onlookers holding gold frames while posing for the camera, was a joyous reminder that art belongs to everyone.

On Sunday December 15, 2024, MAAH launched its tribute to O’Grady entitled HISTORY IS…, an evolution of her concept. This reminds us that we are all part of history and have a responsibility to preserve, protect, and share it.

At the Museum of African American History, we believe in the power of history to shape the present and future. As James Baldwin once wrote, “The great force of history comes from the fact that we carry it within us.” Lorraine O’Grady embodied this truth, and her artistry has left an indelible mark on the world.

Her spirit will forever guide us as we strive to create a more inclusive and enlightened society.
