An Historic Occasion:

Museum Honors Newly Appointed College Presidents of Color

For the first time in the history of Boston there are seven recently appointed college presidents of color. At no other time in the history of our state have there been so many men and women of color leading institutions of higher learning. In late fall 2004, the Museum Board of Directors and the Legacy Society hosted a reception to recognize the accomplishments of these men and women, praise them for leadership and commend them for seizing this historic moment.

In the gathering of leaders from our community, the academy and friends, Executive Director Beverly Morgan Welch encouraged the attendees to understand the significance of this moment in time, when she said, “You are making history here today. Let future generations know what took place here. This is our history, the challenge and the triumph of American History.”

In doing so, the Museum preserved and celebrated the rich history of our fore parents by paying tribute to these college and university leaders whose steadfast commitment to education has elevated them to the highest position in their institutions. We thank them for accepting the challenge of leading a college in these historic times.
